Overview

The groundworks behind battery storage

Battery energy storage units are heavy, sensitive and built to stand for years — so the civil engineering underneath them has to be right. Foundations have to carry concentrated loads and stay stable, hardstandings have to take delivery and craneage, and the surrounding infrastructure has to be built to the same standard as the rest of the connection.

HWBC delivers that civil scope — reinforced foundations and bases for battery units, inverters and switchgear, the ground around them, and the infrastructure that ties a storage installation into the wider site — all with our own workforce, plant and machinery.

What we deliver

Civils for storage

01

BESS Foundations

Robust reinforced concrete foundations and bases, engineered to carry battery units and stay stable long term.

02

Equipment Bases & Plinths

Foundations for inverters, transformers, switchgear and control kiosks associated with the storage system.

03

Site Preparation

Clearance, grading and formation to prepare the ground for a storage installation.

04

Hardstandings & Craneage

Load-bearing surfaces for delivery, installation and maintenance access.

05

Cable Infrastructure

Ducting, trenching and cable routes connecting the storage units into the site.

06

Drainage & Access

Surface-water drainage, containment civils, access roads and trackways around the compound.

Why the civils matter

Only as reliable as the ground it stands on

A BESS installation is only as reliable as the ground it stands on. Settlement, poor drainage or an under-engineered base can undermine an expensive asset — so the foundations aren’t a commodity, they’re part of the system’s long-term integrity.

Because HWBC self-delivers the full civil scope, a single accountable team builds the infrastructure to a consistent standard and to programme.

Combined switchgear & transformer base

HWBC built the reinforced concrete foundations for a combined switchgear and transformer unit — rebar cages and column formwork through to a finished base with cast-in duct entries — then prepared and supported the crane lift that set the unit in place. The same foundation engineering underpins our BESS base work.
